The Bronx Zoo proves themselves an exciting destination year round. Winter is no exception, with zoo lights being one of their most popular events! And there’s a reason why. Lights, lanterns, winter treats, ice sculpting, performers and a mini train ride to name a few. If this sounds like the adventure for you, read on for know before you go tips.
Go Early
While your preference for timing is a personal one, going early you can see the animals and then stay for the lighting of the lanterns and lights. The animal enclosures close by 4:30 so think 3:00 or 3:30 if you’re trying to see their animals on your visit as well. Be warned that if you are going later in the season, it may be very cold to try and do both.
Check the Weather and Dress Accordingly
This is a rain or shine event. When we went last year we wore fleece lined clothes and were taking off jackets by the end. The entire event is outdoors and at times there are wind tunnels. Don’t let this deter you! Dress in layers (we even saw kids in their snow gear!). Whatever works, right? I brought blankets for times when my kids were sitting in the stroller and stored them in the seats when they wanted to see lanterns up close.
Bring the Stroller
If you’re considering bringing a stroller, bring one. Though you won’t be walking around the entire park during the holiday lights show, the amount of walking is still a lot for little legs. Even if you don’t bring the stroller when you go out anymore, at the Bronx Zoo you will find it especially helpful. Not only will your older kids get tired but it is handy for holding on to those discarded coats and blankets. We use this one and love the amount of space we have underneath for storage. So bring that old stroller out of retirement before heading to the zoo.
Consider a Membership
Buying tickets to the zoo lights is considerably cheaper with a membership. If you are inspired to come back to see the animal exhibits stop at the help centers before you leave at the entrance/exit and booths near the old zoo entry (the rhino exhibit) and put your ticket towards the season pass. Season pass holders also have the opportunity to score tickets to he Holiday Zoo Lights preview which is free of charge.
Grab a Map
Grab a map from the booths along the trail or download one off the website. The route is clearly marked but there are fun activities hidden everywhere! The holiday train, for instance is easy to miss. Also there are spots with holiday treats and hot chocolate. Don’t miss the ice sculpting which was a also a bit off the track.
Insider Tip
While walking down the African Animal lanterns path make sure to look up as you get closer to the food court. Up in the trees you will find the peacocks and peahens that normally roam the zoo freely, roosting in the trees to sleep. It’s a remarkable sight seeing such giant birds up high in the trees. And there are a LOT of them up there. Whenever we go to Holiday Lights we start the trend of looking up and it never fails to set off a chain reaction among patrons. Such a neat unmarked sight!
